What is melanin art?

Melanin art is artwork made to celebrate melanin, meaning Black and brown skin, and everything it represents: culture, family, heritage, and identity. The term covers a wide range of work, from realistic figurative portraits of Black women and men to Afrocentric abstracts built on pattern, color, and symbolism. What unites it is the subject. Black life is painted as the centerpiece, not the afterthought.

The phrase grew out of a simple gap. For generations, the art hanging in most homes, galleries, and even dorm-room poster shops didn't reflect Black families at all. Melanin art answers that gap directly. It is representation you can hang on a wall. When a child grows up seeing faces like theirs framed in the living room, that normalcy is the point.

Why painting deep skin tones matters

I want to be honest about why I paint what I paint. For most of Western art history, the people in the frame were white. Black figures, when they appeared in old European portraits at all, were usually pushed to the edges, painted as servants or props rather than as the person the work was about. That absence shaped what generations of people thought a "serious" painting looked like. Melanin art is a direct answer to it.

The gap in the old galleries

Portraiture in the grand tradition was built to record status. Kings, merchants, and their families sat for the great painters, and the skin in those rooms was almost always pale. A Black child could walk through a museum and never once see a face rendered with the same care given to a duchess. That is not a small thing. Who gets painted with dignity is a statement about who counts. Melanin art exists because plenty of us decided that statement needed rewriting.

The Harlem Renaissance and the painters I work behind

The change did not start with me. In the 1920s and 1930s, Harlem became the center of a flowering of Black art, music, and literature now known as the Harlem Renaissance. Painters like Aaron Douglas built a bold, graphic visual language for Black life, and his work helped define the look of the movement. A generation later, Jacob Lawrence told the story of the Great Migration in his sixty-panel series, following Black families as they moved from the rural South to Northern cities. Elizabeth Catlett spent a career putting Black women and working people at the center of her prints and sculptures. These artists proved that Black subjects could carry the full weight of fine art, and they are the lineage I paint behind every day.

How today's painters render Black skin

Contemporary painters carried that work forward and made the rendering of dark skin its own subject. Kerry James Marshall paints figures in deep, unmixed black on purpose, a deliberate move to place the Black body squarely inside a Western canon that long left it out. Barkley L. Hendricks gave his sitters cool, life-size confidence and treated their skin with the same light and care old masters reserved for silk and pearls. In 2018 the official portraits of the Obamas made the point on a national stage: Kehinde Wiley set Barack Obama in the kind of heroic pose European portraiture saved for royalty, and Amy Sherald painted Michelle Obama with her own quiet, deliberate approach to skin and color. Luminosity is the word I keep coming back to. Deep skin is not flat or dark in a painter's hands. It holds gold, copper, plum, and blue, and rendering that glow is a craft worth a lifetime.

People often use these terms interchangeably, but each has its own center of gravity:
