You can spot most AI-generated wall art by checking hands, teeth, jewelry, and text for small errors, then checking the seller's catalogue for a named artist, process photos, and prices that scale with size.

None of those checks is airtight by itself. Image generators improve every few months, and the newest models tend to fix exactly the flaws that gave earlier versions away. What holds up over time isn't a pixel you can zoom into. It's the paper trail behind the piece: who made it, how, and whether anyone can prove it.

What do hands, teeth, and jewelry give away?

Start with the body, because it's still where generators struggle most.

Hands used to be the classic tell, six fingers, an extra knuckle, a thumb growing from nowhere. That's mostly fixed now for a hand resting flat on a table. It gets harder for the model the moment a hand does something complicated. Look at a hand gripping a cup, holding a paintbrush, or laced through someone else's fingers. Watch for a joint bending the wrong way, or two fingers fusing into one past the second knuckle.

Teeth are a smaller version of the same problem. A closed smile is easy. An open mouth is where you'll sometimes see one long ridge instead of individual teeth, or a tooth count that doesn't match the width of the mouth.

Ears and earrings compound the trouble, since earrings are small, paired, and supposed to match. Check whether the left earring matches the right. Check whether a hoop actually threads through the earlobe or just floats near it. Jewelry against skin is its own weak point. A generator sometimes blurs a necklace chain into the neck it rests on, so metal and skin become one continuous surface instead of two separate things.

What do hair, fabric, and backgrounds give away?

Real hair grows from somewhere. Look at a hairline or a part and ask whether you can trace where the strands start. Generated hair often reads as a texture laid over a head shape, with strands fading into each other, no scalp, no part, no sense of which way gravity is pulling.

Fabric is a pattern problem. A striped shirt, a plaid dress, a patterned headwrap, anything with a repeating design should keep repeating the same way as it folds. In a generated image, the pattern often just stops at a fold and picks back up at a different size or angle on the other side. The model isn't tracking one continuous piece of cloth. It's predicting what a fold usually looks like, one patch at a time.

Backgrounds are the place most people never check, which is exactly why they're useful. A window frame that doesn't quite close. A doorway that leads nowhere. A chair leg that vanishes behind another object and doesn't reappear where it should. Objects near the edge of the frame, half cropped, get the least attention from the model and carry the most errors.

Light is the last one, and it takes a slower look. Find the shadow on the face and the shadow on the background object nearest to it. In a real photograph or painting, every shadow points away from one light source. In plenty of generated images, the face is lit from the left and the vase on the table is lit from the right, because the model rendered each piece without a shared light to answer to.

Why does AI art have that airbrushed look?

Even when nothing is technically wrong, a lot of generated images share one tell that's hard to name and easy to feel. Everything is smooth.

Real paint carries texture that follows the artist's hand. A brushstroke starts thick where the brush was loaded and thins as the paint runs low. Two strokes overlap in an order you can actually read, wet over dry or dry over wet. Skin painted from life has small unevenness built in, a rougher patch near a hairline, a thinner wash near an eye. None of that costs the artist anything extra. It's just what a hand does when it's moving.

A generated image smooths all of it into one texture. Skin, fabric, and background can end up with the same faintly plastic finish, because the model isn't loading a brush or letting paint run low. It's predicting pixels, one at a time, from a huge average of other images. Zoom to 400 percent on anything sold as a painting and look at where two colors meet. Real paint meets in a ragged, specific line that took a body to make. Generated "brushwork" often sits on top of the image as a flat texture layer, uniform everywhere, connected to nothing underneath it.

What non-visual signals matter more than the picture?

Honestly, these tell you more than any artifact does, because the picture is exactly the thing a seller can keep regenerating until it looks clean.

A catalogue is the first signal. If a shop lists a few hundred pieces that all appeared within the same week or two, no working artist produced that much original painting in that time. That's a licensing operation or a print catalogue at best, and it's worth exactly what it costs to print. Nothing more.

A name is the second signal. "Our artists" is not a name. A name is something you can search and find an actual body of work behind, not one listing that resembles a hundred others.

Process is the third, and it's the hardest thing to fake cheaply. Someone who painted a canvas has photos of it half finished, a studio with paint on the floor somewhere, maybe a video of a brush moving across it. Someone who generated an image typically has one file and a clean product mockup. If every image on a site is a flat mockup with nothing behind it, no easel, no palette, no half-finished canvas anywhere, that absence is data too.

Price is the fourth, and it's the one people check least. A real painting reproduced at multiple sizes costs more canvas, more ink, and more stretcher bar as the size goes up, so price should climb with size in a way that roughly tracks material cost. When every size on a listing costs almost the same, or price scales in a way that has nothing to do with materials, that's a sign the "product" is a digital file being resized rather than a physical original being reproduced at cost. Sellers who are straight about the difference between an original, an open edition, and a limited edition tend to be straight about their pricing logic too.

Can metadata or content credentials prove anything?

Sometimes, but only in one direction.

Some cameras and some AI tools now embed a signed record of how an image was made, called a Content Credential, built on a technical standard from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, or C2PA. When it's present and intact, it's strong evidence. It's a cryptographically signed statement built from a device, an edit, or a generation event. If a Content Credential says an image came from a generative tool, that's close to a confession.

The catch is what happens when it's missing. C2PA's own FAQ is direct about this: manifests can be separated from a file, deliberately or by accident, through a re-save, a screenshot, or almost any editing tool that doesn't preserve them. The standard has partial answers for that, watermarking and fingerprinting meant to help recover a credential even after a file's been stripped, but none of it is universal yet. So finding a credential proves something real. Finding nothing proves nothing at all.

Plain EXIF data works the same way, only weaker. A camera's EXIF can show the make and model that captured a photograph, but a photograph of a finished painting isn't the painting, and EXIF gets edited or wiped by dozens of ordinary tools in one click. Treat both as a bonus check, never a verdict.

Should you trust an AI-detection tool?

Not by itself. This part is worth being blunt about, because a lot of buyers assume a detector settles the question. It doesn't.

The federal government's own technical standards body has looked hard at this. NIST's 2024 report on synthetic content lays out three broad approaches, classifiers that guess whether an image is generated, watermarking, and provenance data like Content Credentials, and its conclusion is that none of them functions as a standalone solution. Detection is a moving target, since every new generator gets built, in part, against the last generation of detectors. What catches this month's images will very likely miss next month's.

The Federal Trade Commission has gone further and warned specifically that many products marketed as AI-detection tools make accuracy claims that aren't backed up. That's not a reason to ignore a detector result entirely. It's a reason to treat one the way you'd treat a single opinion: useful, not final.

Is "AI-assisted" the same thing as "AI-generated"?

No, and treating them as identical is where a lot of buyers get confused. There's a real range here, not two boxes.

On one end is a human hand painting from a live model or a life-drawn reference, start to finish. On the other end is a full image produced from a text prompt with no physical original behind it at all. In between sits a wide, genuinely gray middle: an artist who uses a generator for a mood board or a compositional sketch, then paints the actual piece by hand. Or a photographer running AI-assisted retouching on an otherwise real photograph. Neither of those middle cases is the same as a prompt-to-canvas image with no painting behind it, and neither deserves the same label.

This matters legally, not only ethically. The U.S. Copyright Office's 2025 report on copyrightability concluded that human authorship is still required for copyright protection, that material generated entirely by AI isn't copyrightable, and that writing a detailed prompt doesn't by itself create the kind of authorship the law protects. A seller advertising "exclusive" AI-generated designs may be selling exclusivity in something nobody legally owns.

The honest move is to ask a seller directly where a piece falls on that range, and expect a straight answer back.

So what actually holds up?

Provenance, not pixels.

Every check in this article, the hands, the fabric, the metadata, the detector, is a hint you can act on today. All of them will get weaker as the technology improves, because that's the direction generative image models have moved every year they've existed. A checklist built entirely around today's flaws has a shelf life.

What doesn't expire as fast is a documented history behind a piece: a named artist with a searchable body of work, photos of the piece in progress, a studio that actually exists, a person who answers a direct question about how something was made. That's harder for a model to fake convincingly than a hand or a shadow, because it requires a real practice behind the work, not just an image of one.
